Academic and professional resources are essential in processing and understanding skills acquired in the MSN program. Importantly, the strategies used in academics are important as they facilitate the degree of understanding of the learner and development of an environment for better knowledge acquisition (Bradshaw, 2017). On their part, professional resources or strategies enable learners in MSN programs to establish and nurture a credible and reliable network that allows them to develop personally and professionally after complete their program. As such, the following academic and professional development resources or strategies will be important in this MSN program.

Academic Resource/Strategy 1: Academic Mentorship

Academic mentorship is the first resource that I will use while undertaking the MSN program. Mentorship denotes the process of nurturing that entails learning from more experienced professionals and organizations to attain the necessary knowledge. The MSN program at Walden is conducted through mentorship programs by the enrolment advisor’s office. Based on the program, the university arranges for professional networking that I will use to derive both knowledge and skills from more experienced nursing practitioners. The academic coaches will enable me to acquire and learn skills while at the institution.

Academic Resource/Strategy 2: Library

The library is the second resource that I will use for academic learning at this institution. Walden University’s central library provides learners access to relevant books, articles and journals. The library’s central database is accessible from any part of the institution and has different databases relevant to advanced nursing education. Furthermore, students can remotely access the library and get an avenue to conduct detailed research and acquire more knowledge (Bradshaw, 2017). The library has resource individuals like the librarian who can guide students on how to research and access critical information for the MSN program.

Academic Resource/Strategy 3: Peer Study Groups

Peer study groups will offer a third academic strategy as the university provide effective learning opportunities through these online discussion boards. The online program offers one the opportunity to interact with fellow MSN students from different parts of the country and even world for effective discussions on their experiences and responding to questions (Bradshaw, 2017). Through the discussion groups, I will learn and understand new concepts and their application in nursing practice.

Academic Resource/Strategy 4:  The Writing Center

The fourth resource that I will deploy is the writing center. The resource offers graduate students with additional opportunities to enhance their skills and knowledge on various styles of writing and how to report their research findings. The center also offers guidance to students on different ways to write their reports in a better and effective manner. I will utilize the writing center to get assistance on issues like proofreading and enhancing my research skills to ensure that they meet the required standards. I hope to get research-related information on issues like writing guidelines that I will use to improve my overall approach to research in this program. The implication is that as a resource, the center will offer increased opportunities to access evidence-based approaches to research and interactions with other students that will share their perspectives on different issues in the course for effective delivery and meeting expected performance.

Professional Resource/Strategy 1: Professional Mentorship

Professional mentorship is a professional strategy that I will use while understanding the MSN program. Walden University allows its MSN program students to develop professional through various attachment to nursing institutions. The internship program allows MSN program students to acquire primary skills through practical engagement while being guided by more experienced health professionals (Gilmore et al., 2017). The aim of this arrangement is to facilitate the learning process by establishing a link between practice and theoretical components of study. Professional mentorship allows students to get hand-on skills in advanced practice nursing, especially in specialty areas.

Professional Resource/Strategy 2: Nursing Bodies and Organizations

The second professional strategy that I will utilize to succeed in the MSN course and nursing practice are professional nursing bodies and organizations. The development of knowledge and networking opportunities are essential components in the MSN program. Students in the program should be informed on activities and events that impact their practice and get connected to other advanced practice nurses in the state and around the country. Professional nursing entities like the American Nurses Association (ANA) offer nurses the opportunity to participate in professional activities and research events like conferences, seminars, and workshops to enhance their practice and apply their educational knowledge (ANA, n.d). The bodies also set and review standards and ethical principles that guide nursing practice. Participation in these organizations through different avenues is critical in developing new insights and understanding research trends.

Professional Resource/Strategy 3: Development Programs

The third resource or strategy that I will deploy are development programs that denote to necessary interventions that the institution has to guide the acquisition of important skills for learners. For instance, the approaches under the program focus on sharpening both communication and interactive skills among learners as the foundation of improving interpersonal skills (Gilmore et al., 2017). Imperatively, MSN program learners require soft skills as they are valuable in future workplace as nurses will interact with patients to get relevant information in nursing practice.

PROFESSIONAL RESOURCE/STRATEGY 4: The Librarian

The fourth resource from a professional perspective is the librarian. Studies show that librarians possess extensive knowledge and skills on acquiring various sources of evidence-based research information and statistics. As professionals, they possess adept experience in deployment of various research tools that can be utilized in developing researches, dissertations and proposals by graduate students. MSN students can use these tools to advance their research through an effective librarian support. The librarian can help one advance their understanding on different concepts associated with the acquisition, review and analysis of literature and how to present data. The librarian will help me in getting resources from the library, especially literature aligned with my project and how it helps one get their goals effectively in research. I will guidelines on complex citations and adherence to institutional expectations, particularly on quality and integrity of the research work.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES/STRATEGIES: Time Management

An additional strategy that I will employ to attain my success in the program is time management. I will ascertain that I utilize the available time in the most appropriate way to meet the program’s demands and requirements like submission of assignments and homework as well as discussions and respective responses. I will prioritize the tasks that are most important and complete them on time. I will strive to create a balance between the different roles and duties that I have, right from professional duties to personal obligations. The other strategy is to be active in group discussions and ensure that I collaborate effectively with all members and the faculty. I will ensure that I take a leading role in projects and attain optimum productivity by using better communication aspects like enhanced interactions and feedback from colleagues. The last strategy is self-discipline to help me meet all the goals and success requirements. I will ensure that I meet the rules and regulations of the university on issues like academic integrity and performance.

Conclusion

These resources and strategies demonstrate the need for MSN program students to be proactive and focused on succeeding in their studies as well as translating their knowledge into practice. Academic and professional resources or strategies will be critical in getting better education and knowledge for effective care delivery as I advance in nursing education under the MSN program. These resources and strategies are critical in helping me meet my goals and attain advanced qualifications through attainment of the MSN degree.

Week 2 | Part 2: Academic Resources and Strategies

I have identified the following academic resources and/or strategies that can be applied to success in the nursing practice in general or my specialty in particular.

Directions: In the space below Identify and describe at least three academic resources or strategies that can be applied to the MSN program, and at least three professional resources that can be applied to success in the nursing practice in general or your specialty in particular. For each, explain how you intend to use these resources, and how they might benefit you academically and professionally.

Academic Resource/Strategy 1

One of the academic resources that I will apply to the MSN program is the library. The university library is an important resource that I will use to gain the knowledge that I need for my academic success. The library is important for the MSN students because it contains different books, journals and publications that students can use for their research. The library also has resourceful people such as the librarian who guides students on the ways of accessing the information that they need for their academic success. I will utilize the library to acquire resources such as books that I need to obtain adequate knowledge on areas of practice related to my specialization. I will also use the library to obtain the needed reading and research resources such as journals and electronic books from databases such as EMBASE and Medline.

Academic Resource/Strategy 2

The second academic resource that I will utilize for my MSN program is the writing centre. The writing centre provides graduate students with the opportunities to expand their knowledge and skills on different writing styles and reporting of research findings. Students also receive guidance on the approaches to writing reports in a concise manner (Walden University Writing Center, n.d.). I will use the writing centre for assistance such as proofreading and publication of my researches. I will also obtain research-related information such as writing guidelines that should be utilized by the graduate students.

Academic Resource/Strategy 3

The third academic resource that I will utilize for my MSN program is the fellowship centre for graduate students. The graduate centre provides the necessary financial support to new and continuing students to continue with their studies. The support is given based on one’s academic performance. Therefore, graduate students are encouraged to explore the possibilities of their needed financial support, which can enhance their success in the MSN program. I will use the fellowship centre to obtain the necessary financial support for my program. I will apply for the available grants for students to ensure that I get the support that I need to complete my program successfully.

Professional Resource/Strategy 1

One of the professional resources that I will utilize for the MSN program is my instructors. The delivery of the content for the MSN program will depend largely on the role played by the instructors and supervisors. The instructors and supervisors provide MSN students with the guidance in knowledge and skill development for their roles as advanced practice nurses (Kauffman, 2015; Gilmore, Wofford & Maher, 2016). I will seek the assistance of the instructors and professors on issues related to the course concepts. I will also seek their support on issues related to practicum objectives and research or thesis development. I will also use them as my mentors. I will rely on them on issues related to my personal and professional development.

Professional Resource/Strategy 2

The second professional resource is professional bodies for nursing. Knowledge development and networking are important factors in the MSN program. The students should be informed on the events that influence their practice and connected to other advanced practice nurses in the state. Professional nursing bodies such as the American Nurses Association provide nurses with the opportunities to participate in activities that influence the practice of MSN nurses (American Nurses Association, n.d.). They also set and revise standards that guide nursing practice. I will use the professional organizations for networking purposes. I will participate in the activities of professional organizations such as discussions to remain updated on new developments in the profession. I will also use the forums to link up with other nurses from different regions in the state.

Professional Resource/Strategy 3

The last professional resource that I will utilize for my MSN program is the librarian. Librarians have extensive knowledge and skills on the acquisition of the different sources of evidence-based data. They also have adept experience in the use of different tools that can be used in the development of researches, dissertations, and proposals. MSN students can utilize this resourceful person to advance their understanding of the different concepts related to literature acquisition, review, and analysis and data presentation. I will use the librarian to provide assistance in acquiring the reading and research resources from the library. I will also seek support from the librarian on issues of research such as ways of doing citations and writing guidelines for the institution.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES/STRATEGIEs

One of the additional strategies that I will utilize for my success in the program is time management. I will ensure that I use the available time effectively to meet the demands of the programs as well as my personal needs. I will prioritize my tasks to ensure that the most important tasks are completed in a timely manner. The other strategy is being an active member of teams in the program. I will seek to work actively in collaboration with the other team members on issues related to our academic success. I will strive to lead projects as a way of strengthening my leadership skills. I will also strive to ensure that optimum productivity is achieved in teams that I lead through interventions such as open communication and increasing transparency and responsibility in team-related activities. The last strategy I will utilize in the program is being self-disciplined. I will strive to ensure that I behave according to the rules and regulations of the institution. I will also seek to ensure that I engage in activities that align with program objectives for my success.

Walden University MSN Core Nursing courses – Generic information for success:

  1. Being graduate level adult learners – It is very unlikely that you will experience the quantity of or detailed guidance as in the announcements received in this course. Being so: Read the course announcements thoroughly and completely. Read the course announcements at least daily for any updates. Going forward the Instructors may post items at any time throughout the day or night. I have unfortunately received emails throughout this course with questions for which the information was previously addressed within the announcements. Again, reading the course announcements is imperative for your success.
  2. The utilization requirement of APA within assignments will increase as you progress to courses that are considered “writing intense”. The APA requirement within discussions will remain as you experienced within this course. This course is not considered writing intense. Familiarize yourself with the correct usage of APA 7th edition. It is within every graded item, within every Nursing course going forward. Familiarize yourself and utilize the Walden resources for APA assistance. I have diligently posted links to those resources several times during this course.
  3. Use ONLY your Walden student email for communication with any Walden University representative. When communicating with your Instructor ALWAYS include your course number and section. Within this course I posted in the announcements numerous times your specific course number and section, as well asked that you include that information when emailing me. Sadly, I received emails that did not include this information, this delayed my assisting you as I had to request your course number and section. This alerts me that course announcements were not being thoroughly and completely reviewed. Going forward it is highly unlikely Instructors will respond to any email other than your Walden student email as email not in Walden origin routinely gets flagged as spam then deleted. Also be fully aware that Instructors required to respond to any email other than your designated Walden Student email.
  4. Be mindful if you do not participate in any Walden course during the 1st week (Day 1 through Day 7) – you will be removed from the course by Walden University regardless of your excuse. Your Instructor has no control over this – it is university policy!
  5. The grading of any assignment cannot proceed by your Instructor unless you submit your assignments via SafeAssign, then in BlackBoard. Traditionally a -0- score will be awarded, with no resubmission availability. At the Graduate level, you are responsible for your work being submitted per instructions AND grading rubric parameters and due date/time. Again, I strongly encourage you to submit your assignments before Day 7 to ensure yourself sufficient time to seek assistance and correct the issue. Remember SafeAssign Drafts and SafeAssign are different!
  6. For Discussions – There is a six (6) day period (Monday, Day 1 through Saturday, Day 6) allowed for the Discussion participation. No allowances for participation will be made outside of the six (6) Discussion active period. Any submitted post outside of the 6-day active discussion period will not be graded and you will receive a -0- score.
  7. Faculty cannot accept or grade any assignment or discussion through email.
  8. Do not wait until Day 7 to begin or submit your assignment. Assignments are due Day 7. At the Graduate level, you are responsible for your work being submitted per instructions, grading rubric parameters and due date and time. Being so = I strongly encourage you to submit your assignments well before Day 7 to ensure yourself sufficient time to seek assistance and correct any issue encountered. I have purposely made myself available to you each day including weekends and responded to you within 12 to 24 hours. Be mindful, Instructors are not required to respond to you on a daily basis. Going forward your Instructors will respond to your Contact the Instructor communications and emails within the required 48 hours’ time period.
  9. As a graduate level student, Instructors will not reach out to you to ensure your assignments/discussions are completed and submitted correctly. As a graduate level adult learner, it is your responsibility to ensure that your discussions and assignments are completed and submitted timely and correctly. As an adult learner, you need to take the initiative and reach out to your Instructor immediately when you encounter an issue. You were offered an online orientation by Walden University – Did you participate in that orientation? If not, I strongly suggest you contact your advisor and make arrangements.
  10. If you experience technical issues, please utilize your resources and contact the Walden Customer Care Team or Walden IT for assistance. Going forward you will encounter several PowerPoint presentations, Walden Templates within your future courses at Walden University, as well be required to submit multiple items with a single submission.
  11. Understand the Time Zones at Walden University and the applicable conversion. Your course calendar is in Eastern Time as is the time/date stamp of submission/participation for your discussions and assignments. Going forward all of your future Nursing courses require that your Discussions, any Quiz or Assignment will continue to be due submitted in Mountain Time.
  12. Have a computer and Internet backup plan. What will you do if your computer crashes or your Internet is not working?  Computer/Internet/work issues are your responsibility. Allowances will not be made due to these issues causing a lack of participation or missed deadline, rather a -0- score will be awarded. Save your work on a flash or hard drive. Know where you can go to access the Academic Skills Center as it is an excellent resource to assist in your success.
  13. For Assignments – Only prior communication with AND Instructor approval will late assignments be considered for grading. Assignments submitted late will be deducted 4% daily until Day 5 OR may deduct the entire 20% regardless of time/day of late submission. This is at the discretion of each Instructor and will vary course-by-course. After Day 5, in any course, the assignment will be scored a -0-.
  14. Be familiar with how to access and utilize the Walden resources. I posted the most useful and frequently utilized resources numerous times within the course announcements.
  15. Ensure your discussions have a substance, depth and breadth, critical analysis, and reflection element within the grading rubric. In short – if your discussion Main Post does not closely compare to the discussion exemplar located within the course resources and announcements posted within this course your grade will be drastically reduced.
  16. Know who and where to submit any documentation if necessary, for allowances for any late or missed assignments. Remember Instructors are not permitted to accept any medical documentation.
  17. Know who your advisor is and how to contact them.
  18. Know where and how to locate your student feedback. This course is 6 weeks in duration – In Week 5 I received emails inquiring as to “I see my grade but don’t know why points were deducted” – It was sadly apparent the feedback being provided was not being reviewed by those students. Your numeric score and student feedback are in different locations – this was addressed in the course announcements. If you cannot locate or have not located your student feedback for discussions and assignments – I strongly encourage you to contact the Customer Care Team as you have missed a tremendous amount of information.

Student Resources: Here is a partial listing of Walden University resources that have been shared with you during this course. You will frequent these as you progress throughout your future courses. Again, I strongly recommend that you bookmark each of these for your future courses.

Academic and Professional Success Plan Template

Week 2 | Part 2: Academic Resources and Strategies

Nurses acquire numerous skills and values in the course of their education journey, enabling them to provide competent care and make positive changes in society. Portfolios offer a detailed highlight of nurses’ competencies. A vital part of portfolio development is academic activities and accomplishments demonstrating a nurse’s competencies in a particular specialty. The purpose of this section is to describe strategies for including academic activities and accomplishments in my professional development goals and how the goals align with the University’s emphasis on social change.

Including Academic Activities and Accomplishments

Academic activities and accomplishments include a nurse’s engagements and success areas as a learner and professional. A service section in my academic portfolio can highlight my notable contributions to my colleagues and the broader nursing profession during the learning process. A suitable example is volunteer work in counseling different patients and health promotion programs. Besides a service portfolio, I should ensure that my curriculum vitae (CV) provide adequate information about my academic qualification, values, and accomplishments. A good CV should be precise and tailored to the job that a candidate is interested in (Huber, 2021). The service portfolio and the CV will enable me to highlight my academic achievements and accomplishments in detail.

Goals Alignment with University’s Emphasis on Social Change

Social change is crucial for the progressive growth of society. Walden University (2022) describes social change as real people working to improve others’ lives. This change can be evolutionary (slow) or revolutionary (rapid). My professional development goals are centered on progressive development as a nurse practitioner to improve the health of individuals and communities. Achieving this goal requires me to acquire adequate skills to offer competent care and empower people to live healthily. Nurses can also achieve social change by helping people respond to evolving social norms and values (Nilsen et al., 2020). As a healthcare professional, I should also improve my skills over time to prevent illnesses and ensure people can effectively cope with chronic diseases and mental disorders.

Conclusion

Nurses should be adequately qualified to provide competent and patient-centered care. Academic portfolios should explicitly highlight nurses’ competencies and accomplishments. The desire to promote social change should be universal among nurses. Accordingly, I have an innate desire to acquire adequate skills to succeed as a professional and social change agent.
