Assignment: Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 2: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

Academic integrity involves demonstrating a commitment to and honest and moral behavior in academic work. It is mostly related to academic writing at the university level since it entails giving credit to other authors’ work when you use their research work or ideas in writing (Newman, 2020).

Academic integrity places an obligation to the student to acknowledge other authors’ contributions. Consequently, academic writers are obliged to acknowledge every source that they have used when writing research papers and essays. Failure to acknowledge others’ work is referred to as plagiarism (Newman, 2020).

Furthermore, scholars should apply academic integrity by writing using their own words and ensuring that they do not accidentally misinform readers that the ideas expressed were theirs. Integrity should be applied by the writer understanding and rephrasing the text in their own words but still giving credit to the owner of the ideas.

Professional practices refer to specific behaviors that a particular profession considers appropriate for its members. The behaviors mainly consist of treating colleagues with respect and decorum despite professional and personal differences, mentoring incoming professionals, and serving others (Poorchangizi et al., 2019).

Scholarly ethics refer to the entire array of explicit and implicit professional standards and characteristics that define an ethical, honest scholar. A scholar exhibits scholarly ethics by fulfilling the implicit and explicit professional expectations and implementing the practices set by their profession (Stander, 2020). They should also ensure that their professional behaviors and work match the ethical expectations considered crucial in their profession.

Grammarly promotes academic integrity through its plagiarism checker feature, which scans one’s essay or research work for borrowed texts. The feature enables the scholar to identify parts of the essay that have been plagiarized by underlining exact plagiarized texts and their origin (Soni, 2018).

SafeAssign promotes academic integrity by checking and preventing plagiarism of texts. It provides

scholars with opportunities to insert correct sources instead of just paraphrasing (Soni, 2018). The SafeAssign tool compares the student essay or work against various databases to detect overlapping areas between their essay and existing texts.

In addition, paraphrasing promotes academic integrity by having the student write their interpretation of another author’s ideas (Stander, 2020). It is an efficient strategy to restate, compress, and explain another person’s ideas while at the same time ensuring credibility to one’s argument and analysis.

PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

Academic integrity at Walden University is considered important to develop students’ intellectual development. As an MSN student, I purpose to maintain the integrity and ethics of my academic work by avoiding incidences of cheating, plagiarism, providing false information, copyright violation, and misrepresentation of credentials (Stander, 2020). I will avoid plagiarism by utilizing tools including SafeAssign and Grammarly.

I will also avoid unintentional paraphrasing by ensuring that I have sufficiently paraphrased other authors’ work to avoid having my essay being too similar to the original work (Stander, 2020). Besides, I will cite other authors’ work as many times as I have used their ideas. Furthermore, I will insert a citation having the author’s name, publication year, and the page number after the paraphrased text.

As a practicing nurse, I will uphold integrity by following the nurses’ code of conduct to ensure professionalism. I will also treat my fellow nurses with respect and dignity regardless of their years of experience, professional qualifications, and personal characteristics (Poorchangizi et al., 2019).

Furthermore, I will maintain ethics by upholding the ethical principles of beneficence, nonmaleficence, autonomy, and justice in my practice. For instance, I will ensure that interventions implemented on patients will benefit them rather than causing harm (Poorchangizi et al., 2019). I will also ensure that patients are involved in their care, and their treatment decisions are considered when planning treatment.

  2. Professional work as a nurse throughout your career. Include a review of resources and approaches you propose to use as a student and a professional.

Note: Add your work for this Assignment to the original document you began in the Module 1 Assignment, which was built from the Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Template.

PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

One of the strategies that I will embrace to promote integrity and ethics in my academic work as a student of the MSN program is ensuring originality of my academic work. MSN students are expected to produce original work in undertaking their assignments and projects.

They achieve originality by acknowledging the sources of information that they use in undertaking their assignments and projects (Pandit & Gite, 2020). Students also check the originality of their work using databases such as Turnitin to ensure that it is not plagiarized. Through it, academic integrity is upheld.

The other strategy that I will adopt to ensure integrity and ethics in my academic work as a student of the MSN program is reading and understanding all the course and syllabus requirements. I will strive to understand the accepted level of academic performance that is required of the MSN students.

I will also strive to achieve to the best level of academic standards that are stated in the institution (Bultas et al., 2017). I will also ensure that I seek assistance from my course mates and instructors on the issues that I do not understand, as it pertains coursework and syllabus of the MSN program.

I will also adopt a number of strategies to ensure integrity and ethics in my professional life. One of the strategies that I will adopt is ensuring professionalism in patient care and working with other healthcare professionals. I will ensure that I demonstrate ethical behaviors such as respect, trust and honesty in working with patients and healthcare providers from different backgrounds.

I will also ensure advocate the rights of the vulnerable in my profession. The second strategy that I will employ to ensure integrity and ethics as a professional nurse is abiding with the institutional policies and regulations. Health organizations have rules, policies, and regulations that guide the behavior of the employees. Healthcare providers are expected to abide with the rules as a way of promoting safety, efficiency, and quality in patient care (Erikson & Davies, 2017). Therefore, I will behave in accordance with the developed rules and regulations as a way of promoting professionalism, ethics, and integrity in my practice.

The last strategy that I will adopt to ensure integrity and ethics in my professional life is utilizing best practices in decision-making. I will ensure that I utilize sources of evidence-based data to make sound and informed decisions on issues related to patient care. Evidence-based decision-making is important in practice, as it promotes safety, quality and efficiency in patient care. It also eliminates ethical issues in practice (Erikson & Davies, 2017). Therefore, I will work in collaboration with the other healthcare providers and patients to explore the ways in which evidence-based care and solutions can be delivered.

Overall, integrity and ethics are important for MSN students and MSN nurses. MSN students and nurses can utilize a number of tools to ensure integrity in their academics and professional lives. The tools include promoting academic honesty, understanding academic roles and requirements, and demonstrating professionalism as nurses working with patients and healthcare providers from diverse backgrounds. Therefore, MSN students and nurses should play an active role in the exploration of the effective strategies for promoting ethics and integrity in their lives.

Quiz: APA Style and Format

As a nurse embarking on an advanced degree, you are developing the characteristics of a scholar-practitioner, which include strong communication skills. Writing in a scholarly manner involves supporting your thoughts with evidence from the literature and appropriately using APA formatting.

One of the challenges of scholarly writing is paraphrasing the thoughts of others in your work. Paraphrasing, and correctly citing the original author for his or her ideas, allows you to take the ideas of others, summarize them, and incorporate them into your own writing. When summarizing the ideas of others, it is important to avoid plagiarizing (i.e., copying the words and ideas of others as though they were your own). In addition to expanding your knowledge of APA Style, this modules’ Learning Resources help you distinguish between paraphrasing and plagiarizing.

This Quiz will help you determine how your understanding of these concepts and preparedness to reflect them in your work. The questions presented on the Quiz are derived from the Resources related to APA writing standards, plagiarism, and academic integrity.

I like the topic you chose to research.  I personally feel that compassion fatigue is at an all time high and that its contributing to nurse burnout.  I have never worked in a mental heatlh unit but I am and ER nurse and know that mental health patient care can definitley become overwhelming and stressful at times.

I am surprised that you were not able to find more up to date research articles related to the subject. I am sorry you had such difficulty in finding your topic on the database your chose.  I would recommend trying a nursing database.  Walden University (n.d) recommends the nursing databases for a lot of research.  The library discusses nursing databases as being great resources for peer reviewed journals and articles.

I used the CINAHL database to search you topic and was able to find a great article written in 2022.  The article is called “Compassion fatigue in mental health nurses: A Systematic Review” and it discusses the need of future research for mental health nurses regarding their compassion fatigue.  It reviews other articles related to the topic.

I like to use systematic reviews to discover other articles related to my topic of interest.  This is a great article to find other relevant and related articles to your topic.  Hope this helps! Good luck with you future research!

Module2 | Part 2: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

Academic integrity is essential to teaching, learning, and research for MSN students. It entails a continuous process of encouraging a multifaceted network of strategies and responsibilities over the MSN program.

Academic integrity gives students and the faculty an opportunity to generate new ideas, knowledge, and creativity while acknowledging other people’s work (Newman, 2020). The purpose of this assignment is to explore the relationship between academic integrity and writing as well as between professional practices and scholarly ethics and discuss how Grammarly, Safe Assign, and paraphrasing promote academic integrity.

Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity

It provides scholars with opportunities to insert correct sources instead of just paraphrasing (Soni, 2018).

NURS 6003 Part 2 Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics Conclusion

Academic integrity refers to the commitment, honesty, and moral behavior that scholars are expected to demonstrate in academic work. Students are required to acknowledge other authors’ work when writing their essays and research to demonstrate integrity. Professional practices refer to the conduct considered appropriate for members of a particular profession.

A scholar should act by this professional conduct as a way of upholding to scholarly ethics. Grammarly and SafeAssign, promotes academic integrity through features that allow students check for plagiarism in their essays. Besides, paraphrasing enables students interpret others’ ideas in their writing, thus avoiding plagiarism.

Issues of misconduct not only affect students but also professionals in different cadres of specialty. As an MSN student, I intend to identify contextual factors that can place me in a precarious state of academic dishonesty in order to maintain integrity during learning (Abbott & Nininger, 2021). I will work to avoid any practice of academic dishonesty by evading all forms of false representation of academic data and cheating. Besides, I intend to establish a locus of control in learning by extracting factual and real studies as a way to elevate my level of originality in the learning process (Sefcik, Striepe & Yorke, 2019). However, when assigned tasks that involve academic writing, I will do my research extensively, paraphrase the work and acknowledge works written by authors through quoting their names in my texts. Notwithstanding, I will use SafeAssign and Grammarly to ensure that my written work does not have any similarities with the published work of other authors.

In my role as a professional nurse, I anticipate to develop a moral principle in my career by maintaining integrity and work ethics during practice. I will remain true to my call as a nurse by delivering services and going beyond the call of duty to provide the best care to patients (West, 2020). I will adhere to the rules and regulations of nursing practice to ensure that my profession provides a meaningful purpose to members of the society I serve. Based on this premise, I will be responsive to my actions towards patients to ensure that I do not violate their rights during care (Abbott & Nininger, 2021). Moreover, I intend to liaise with multidisciplinary teams in the facility I serve so that I gain further insights on nursing practice and to guide me in decision-making as I provide care services to patients with varied health needs.

NURS 6003 Part 2 Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics Conclusion

Academic and professional integrity serve vital roles in nursing practice. Through academic integrity, students learn and develop the principle of honesty so that they develop necessary competency for future practice. Integrity acquired through learning builds confidence in nurses in adhering to the professional codes of practice as they provide service to patients. As such, integrity as a virtue should be instilled onto nurses during elementary learning so that they embrace it in their future practice to improve quality of life of patients.

Ethical conduct is essential at all levels of academic and professional conduct. Adherence to the required conduct ensures that nursing students and practitioners are free from ethical malpractice. The purpose of this section is to analyze the connection between integrity, professional practices, and scholarly ethics.

Part 1: The Connection between Academic and Professional Integrity

Explanation for the Relationship between Academic Integrity and Writing

Nursing students utilize many sources to expand their knowledge. Common sources include books, journal articles, and government/organizational publications. Academic integrity is characterized by honesty in a student’s work (writing). As a result, adherence to the established academic integrity principles requires students to acknowledge ideas from the authors of various resources (Darr, 2019). A suitable example of this adherence is citing and referencing books and journal articles a student uses to complete an assignment.

Explanation for the Relationship between Professional Practices and Scholarly Ethics

Nurses influence practice change by implementing scientific research in nursing practice. Combined with clinical expertise and patients values and preferences, scientific research forms the foundation of evidence-based practice (Li et al., 2019). Consequently, scientific (scholarly) sources should be ethical to influence the desired professional practice. Scholarly ethics is characterized by accuracy, honesty, and clarity (adequately researched and clear) of ideas.

Contribution of Grammarly, Turnitin, and Paraphrasing to Academic Integrity

Grammarly helps nursing professionals and other scholars to correct mistakes in their work. Besides, it has an option for checking plagiarism. Scholars primarily use Turnitin to ensure that the work submitted for research or classroom assignments is plagiarism-free. Paraphrasing is the art of rewriting other researchers’ ideas using their own words (Darr, 2019). Jointly, these scholarly tools and techniques promote academic integrity by enhancing the correctness of information and ensuring that it has not been previously submitted as someone’s else work.

Section 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity at Work

Academic Work as a Student of the MSN Program

An effective strategy for maintaining integrity at work as a student is observing all the academic guidelines related to assignments and research. As Perkins et al. (2020) noted, plagiarism denotes academic dishonesty, which must be avoided by all permissible means. As a result, I will ensure that all my assignments are plagiarism-free and have been paraphrased appropriately. Information sourced from other scholars should be cited and referenced accordingly.

Professional Work as a Nurse

To pursue integrity and ethics as a nurse throughout my career, I will adhere to the established ethical principles of nursing practice. For instance, nurses are obliged to provide safe and quality care and advocate for patient needs (Nsiah et al., 2019). Providing such care requires compassion, credibility, and trust between patients and providers. Besides, I will adhere to organizational and governmental policies regulating workplace conduct and general nursing conduct.

Resources and Approaches to Use as a Student and a Professional

As a student, essential tools include writing support tools such as Grammarly, Turnitin, and SafeAssign. They will ensure that I produce original content and do not breach any academic ethics principle. The most reliable approaches are information paraphrasing and crediting outside sources. As a nursing professional, the same tools and approaches will be vital since I will still be conducting research and disseminating information to various organizations. Always, I will be guided by the professional code of ethics for nurses.

NURS 6003 Part 2 Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics Conclusion

Integrity and ethics are mandatory as a student and professional. As a result, nursing students should know what ethical conduct entails for students and professionals. In this section, I have explained the relationship between academic integrity and professional ethics. I have also explained the resources and strategies I will use to pursue integrity and ethics in academics and nursing practice.

Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection between Academic and Professional Integrity

Academic integrity and scholarly writing go hand in hand. While communicating using the written word is an inherently creative process, academic integrity is the practice of holding oneself accountable for one’s work. The reason academic integrity is important is that honesty is really the best policy, and using your own perspective and words makes your writing unique. Therefore, academic integrity and writing are a pair that work together and create professional content that is your own. In academic writing, one must be sure that papers are properly formatted using the APA format, and that all resources are properly cited. The “Writing Center staff created this APA checklist to help students remember the basics of APA citations, reference lists, and style” (“Academic Guides: Plagiarism Prevention Resource Kit: Home”, 2022). Using the provided resources will help students improve their scholarly writing.

Professional practices and scholarly ethics are both important, as they serve to guide and manage students to do their best. This writer believes it is also important for us to use these resources to substantiate our arguments in our writing and to make sure we are using reliable scholarly information. We must have the education piece to be able to properly conduct our writing for our audience. The two components are what students build on and grow when they go on to the real world in their profession. The academic and professional pieces of resources will guide me in succeeding in this program, so I do plan on utilizing these resources.

Grammarly, Safe Assign, and paraphrasing all contribute to academic integrity in different ways. Grammarly is a powerful tool that can be used to correct one’s grammar, thus improving writing skills. The “Walden University’s Writing Center provides premium Grammarly accounts to all current Walden University students at no additional cost” (“Academic Guides: Grammarly: Overview”, 2022). Students can build confidence in their writing by using this program to improve their scholarly writing.

SafeAssign exists to avoid plagiarism and to make sure that writing is original and uses the student’s own words. “The Walden University student handbook broadly defines plagiarism as the “use of intellectual material produced by another person without acknowledging its source” (“Academic Guides: Plagiarism Prevention Resource Kit: Home”, 2022).  SafeAssign provides students with clarity by checking their writing and affirming that their work is original. “SafeAssign is Walden’s primary tool for detecting, deterring, and preventing plagiarism” (“Academic Guides: Grammarly: Overview”, 2022).  “The student resources below will support you in using SafeAssign, including how to submit drafts and assignments through SafeAssign and how to interpret a SafeAssign Originality Report” (“Academic Guides: Grammarly: Overview”, 2022). Paraphrasing is another element of academic integrity because it is important that students use their own knowledge, and not just another person’s words and ideas.

PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

Scholarly writing requires effort and due diligence. The writer plans to execute this by utilizing the tools and resources that are presented to me, such as the writing center, the library, and more. This will help to expand my knowledge and thus improve my writing skills. Other strategies the writer intends to practice in order to maintain academic integrity as a student include using resources, such as Grammarly and SafeAssign. The writer will use up-to-date resources to ensure that my written work is credible. I will use these strategies to guide me in my practice and my journey to becoming a scholarly writer.

The MSN program encourages students to practice using their own words in order to maintain academic integrity. “Integrity involves treating others with respect communicating with one another in a positive, courteous manner, honoring confidences, and maintaining a professional demeanor both in and out of the workplace” (Rosenkoetter & Milstead, 2010). While the writer continues to grow in the nursing profession, the writer vows to maintain integrity and ethics by using strategies taught to me by the Walden University’s program.

The Walden university website will provide me with all the essential tools I will need to be successful in this program. The Walden library is where I can find the references that will provide me with the information to write my papers. It is available to me on a daily basis, whenever the writer may happen to need it. The writer can find books, websites, journals, and much more through this resource. The writer anticipates that this is where the writer will find many of my evidence-based resources when writing my papers.

As a nursing healthcare professional, the writer will stay up to date with the latest evidence-based practices so that the writer can share relevant information with my patients and communicate it in a way that is professionally based on the policies and procedures pertaining to my work. Another strategy the writer intends to utilize to maintain integrity throughout my professional work includes networking by attending conferences and workshops. The writer will “recognize the value of codes of ethics developed by the American Nurses Association and the International Council of Nurses; the use of these codes by practicing nurses to guide clinical practice is a long-held standard in the nursing profession” (Rosenkoetter & Milstead, 2010).

Module 2 | Part 2: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

Maintaining academic integrity is essential for any student hoping to succeed in their studies. There are a number of tools and techniques students can use to ensure their work is their own, and that they are not accused of plagiarism. Some of the most common tools used to check for plagiarism include Grammarly, Safe Assign, and Paraphrasing tools. The purpose of this part is to elaborate the connection between academic and professional integrity.

Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection between Academic and Professional Integrity

There is an important relationship between academic integrity and writing. Writing is a process of intellectual discovery, and academic integrity is essential to the promotion of learning and Scholarship. The Center for Community values at Stanford characterizes academic integrity as “a commitment, even in the face of adversity, to six fundamental values: honesty, trustworthiness, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage.” These values are indispensable to any community of scholars (Onu et al., 2021). They are underpinning intellectual interactions and communications. When scholars write with academic integrity, they are being honest about their sources and giving credit where it is due. They are being trustworthy in their interpretation and analysis of data. And they are respecting the work of others by Referencing ideas fairly.

The relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics is one of trust. Professionals are entrusted with their clients’ welfare and must act in their clients’ best interests. This often requires professionals to maintain strict ethical standards in order to protect their clients from harm, both physically and emotionally. Scholarship also relies on trust, but between different scholars. When new research is published, it is built upon the existing body of research. In order for this to happen effectively, scholars must be able to trust that the work of others is accurate and reliable. This trust is maintained by upholding rigorous academic standards, such as those outlined in the Code of Ethics for the American Anthropological Association.

There are a number of ways that Grammarly, Safe Assign, and paraphrasing tools can contribute to academic integrity. First and foremost, paraphrasing tools can help ensure that writing is free of plagiarism (Curtis & Tremayne, 2021). By checking for unoriginal content, Safe Assign can help one avoid accidentally copying someone else’s work. Additionally, these tools can also help academic writers properly cite their sources, which is important for giving credit where it is due and avoiding academic dishonesty (Stevens et al., 2020). Finally, using Grammarly can help in improving overall writing, making papers stronger and more accurate. In sum, utilizing Grammarly, Safe Assign, and paraphrasing can be beneficial in a variety of ways when it comes to preserving academic integrity.

PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

It is essential that students maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethics in their academic work. To help ensure this, there are few recommend a few key strategies. As a student of the MSN program, I will proofread my work carefully before submitting it. A great tool for this is Grammarly, which can help identify any potential errors in my writing. Second, I will use proper citations when referencing someone else’s work. This not only gives credit where it is due, but also helps to prevent accusations of plagiarism. Finally, I will take advantage of Safe Assign feature in BlackBoard. This tool allows me to submit papers electronically and check them for any form of plagiarism.

There are a few key things I’ll do throughout my career to maintain the integrity and ethics of my academic work: I will always uphold the values of honesty, respect, and responsibility in all my academic work. I will never falsify or fabricate information, and I will always cite sources correctly. I will never share confidential patient information without consent. Finally, I will always behave ethically and with integrity in all professional interactions.

Conclusion

There can be no doubt that academic integrity and honesty are important. Without them, the educational system would crumble and knowledge would not be able to advance. Simply put, academic honesty is essential for ensuring that learning can take place. That said, there are a number of reasons why academic integrity and honesty are so important. First, they ensure that the research process is valid. If researchers cannot trust that the data they are looking at is accurate, then they cannot trust the conclusions they draw from it. This means that innovation and progress grind to a halt – bad news for everyone involved in academia.
