The role of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) continues to expand as reforms call for increased accessibility to specialized care for different types of patients across care and age continuum. The APRN position continues to grow as critical role in reducing the gap between physicians, specialty nurses and the health population. APRNs play a critical role in the present as well as the future of health care because of their specialized skills, knowledge and abilities. Among these specialties for APRNs is being informatics nurse whose role is to integrate nursing and computer science to enhance the quality of care in different settings (Carter et al., 2017). The purpose of this paper is to discuss my future scope as an informatics nurse, the regulatory bodies overseeing the specialty, accreditation and credentialing as well as nursing professional organizations associated with the specialty. In its final part, the paper discusses a controversial or evolving issues that may impact the scope of practice for nurse informaticist in the next five years.

Scope of Future Role as a Nurse Informaticist, Regulation, Accreditation and Credentialing

The APRN practice level’s scope of practice is defined by the Nurse Practice Act and governed by the Board of Nursing in respective states. Today, big data drives decisions at each level of health systems and health organizations must have data experts who understand and communicate the technological processes and reasons forming them to clinical staff. Nurse informaticists bridge this gap by combining clinical experience and data expertise (Fealy et al., 2018). Nurse informaticists main role is to identify, define, and share data, information, and knowledge in nursing science for effective decisions.

The role of nurse informaticists has evolved from the initial function of being “clinical analyst” to being at the intersection of technology and clinical practice. Nursing informatics is well-structured specialty that goes beyond designing electronic health records (EHRs). With the shift to value-based service, informatics nurses focus on an array of technical areas to enhance support for patients, nursing staff, and other critical providers. These areas include implementation of EHRs, documentation optimization, accurate data capture and process changes to support regulatory compliance and strategic initiatives as well as departmental systems’ improvement. Informatics nurses also coordinate care and guide population health initiatives (Forman et al., 2020). Therefore, the scope of informatics nurses includes validation of data, implementation of new technology and processes, and understanding and communicating the “why” driving new processes.

Regulations that nurse informaticists must meet entail completion of a graduate nursing education program, have a master’s degree qualification and experience. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) remains the primary regulatory entity that regulates the specialty as part of the advance practice registered nurses (APRNs), who are prepared at master’s level to assume responsibilities in their specialty. Certification in informatics is completed based on the attainment of Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from recognized programs from institutions like the Grand Canyon University.

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is the main accreditation body for informaticist nurses. ANCC provides an RN-BC certification to allow one specialize in informatics as a nurse. The body also provides certification based on the set eligibility criteria as mentioned earlier. Nursing informatics also offers career path in leadership as illustrated by the rise in the position of Chief Nursing Informatics Officer (CNIO) in many health systems (Nagle, 2021). CNIO are a link between nursing and information technology and collaborate with Chief Medical Officer. The implication is that informatics nurses provide a critical link between nursing practice and health information technology and their overall management.

Three Professional Nursing Organizations

Professional nursing organizations are essential for registered and practicing nurses, especially when in advanced and specialty roles like informatics nurse. The organizations offer a platform and forum for nurses to come together and tackle issues affecting the profession, healthcare provision, and the future reforms to improve overall care delivery. Professional organizations allow nurses to have a unified voice and lobby for reforms through collaborating with legislators at state and federal levels. These organizations are fundamental in advancing one’s nursing career as they provide materials and opportunities to interact and learn new trends as well as latest research evidence to advance care practice (Nahm et al., 2019). The three organizations that I believe are most influential in advancing the scope and influence of advanced nursing include the American Nurses Association, the American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA), and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).

The American Nurses Association (ANA) is an umbrella body and a leader in the nursing professional organizations’ sector and represents the interests of all nurses; irrespective of being in faculty or practice, amounting to 4 million in the country. ANA leads in advancing quality care and holds the strongest voice for the nursing profession (ANA, 2022). The association is open to all registered nurses, offers resources to further their career and lobbying for resources from both state and federal governments. The ANA believes that nursing informatics is a core specialty that integrates nursing science and different information and analytical sciences aimed at enhancing the nursing practice.

The American Nursing Informatics Association comprises of professional nurses and associates who value integrity and committed to the delivery of high quality and cost-effective health care (Kleib et al., 2019). The association seeks to develop professionals who use innovative informatics to eliminate health disparities with the aim of improving the health of all individuals and populations. The association offers a platform for members to advance their informatics specialty using research, education and practice in their roles and settings.

The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) (2022) offers and safeguards the development of staff nurses in critical and acute care settings. The organization provides professional and personal support for nurse professionals, especially in critical care settings, to pursue the best possible patient care by enhancing their knowledge, abilities, and skills in care provision. The organization allows individual nurses to use their abilities and engage in critical thinking to improve care provision. It also supports lifelong learning journey for nurses and develops better skills to approach healthcare issues.

These three organizations are essential in advancing the scope and influence of advanced nursing areas like informatics nursing because of the opportunities that they provide for members. These organizations are keen on improving the integration of informatics nursing as a core aspect of care delivery for patients in diverse settings (Fealy et al., 2018). The three organizations appreciate the need for specialization for nurses to offer better care to patient through effective collaboration and coordination of care.

The organization that I will likely join is the American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA). The goals of ANIA is to develop professional nurses and associated who are committed and with integrity to deliver high quality and cost-effective health care (ANIA, 2022). These individuals demonstrate a commitment to professional development and advocate for elimination of health disparities to enhance accessibility to all populations. The association’s main mission is to advance nursing informatics using education, research and practice in all roles and areas.

The goals and mission of the organization fit with my worldview and philosophy of care as I value all people and communities. The association believes in integrity and the provision of quality care as well as advocacy and inclusion. These values are essential in a diverse society and demonstrate a commitment to ensuring that all have access to quality care by eliminating existing disparities in care provision (Flinter et al., 2017). Nursing informatics offers an opportunity for professionals to leverage existing resources to their advantage to attain better coordination and interpretation of existing data and information to make better care decisions.

Membership in this organization will enhance my practice as it will allow to get resources to improve my skills and knowledge in informatics. As such, I will be better positioned to serve populations and individuals through collaboration and coordination of care. As a member of the organization, I will get a platform to voice areas that need improvement to better integrate nursing and data to help providers make better decisions.

Controversial and Evolving Issue

The most controversial issue that may impact my future scope of practice and role in informatics nursing is security and privacy of big health care data. The healthcare industry produces huge volumes of data that is susceptible to misuse and breaches. Many health care organizations have suffered data breaches that violate privacy rules set by frameworks like HIPAA and HITECH laws. Increased use of informatics means that providers may share protected health information (PHI) to make better care decisions, sometimes without the consent of a patient in cases of emergency (Monsen eet al., 2019). Hacking and unauthorized access to such data may influence the profession and other stakeholders like organizations as they will be legally liable for violations of existing laws. The issue matter to advanced registered nurses specializing in informatics as it may affect their overall ability to function in their roles and enhance care coordination.

Conclusion

Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) are a core part of the over 4million nursing population in the U.S. Increased specialty at advanced level like nursing informatics will improve the delivery of care to patients through effective decision-making among providers. Nursing informatics offers an opportunity to enhance care provision for patients because of better coordination and bridging the gap between big data science and nursing practice.
