Nurses continue to adopt greater responsibilities as leaders and managers in different healthcare settings due to current changes in legislations at state and federal levels. As the role of the nurse transforms from a physician’s assistant to an integral member of the life-saving team, the nurse leader role emerges. The scope of a nurse leader is wide but at the core of this responsibility is to guide nurses and ensure that they are complying to high standards of quality care and patient safety.

In its report, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) noted the importance of nurses leading change and advancing health as essential ways of transforming the nursing profession and delivering quality and safe care to patients in diverse practice settings (Ducharme et al., 2017). The IOM report key message states that nurses should be full partners with physicians and other health professionals in redesigning healthcare in the country. As an advanced registered nurse, my future role is to be a nurse leader in clinical practice championing effective care and increased partnership between nurse practitioners, physicians and other health care professionals.

Successful nurse leaders maintain and use evidence-based practices in their nursing team and settings. The implication is that as a nurse leader, one must be up to date and well conversant with different medical practices and protocols. The care decisions and choices of nurse leaders should be informed by evidence-based research studies and public health concerns of the population and patients visiting their practice environment.  Nurse leaders are responsible for monitoring patient care to ascertain that members of their teams work toward optimum quality standards.

NCSBN provides state boards of nursing with current nursing practice programs to enhance collaborative approaches to different nursing issues and nurse leaders incorporate such new evidence into care practice among their nursing teams. Professional nursing organizations serve as excellent resources to nurses in any specialty. Three professional nursing organizations that interest me are the American Nurses Association (ANA), the National League for Nursing (NLN), and the American Board of Nursing Specialists (ABNS). 

The American Nurses Association is one of the largest nursing organizations and, “works to foster high standards of nursing practice and ethics while promoting nurse safety and wellness,” (AMN Healthcare, 2023). Members of the ANA have access to mentoring opportunities, continuing education resources, conferences and networking events, and many other outlets for professional development. The intent and focus of the ANA is to work on behalf of nursing for safer conditions and promote continuing education and up-to-date competencies. 

The National League for Nursing is one of the oldest nursing organizations. The NLN, “represents nurse faculty and other leaders in nursing education in healthcare organizations and institutions of higher learning,” (AMN Healthcare, 2023). The NLN offers research grants, continuing education opportunities, as well as other services. The focus and intent of the NLN pertains more to education and higher levels of learning. 

The American Board of Nursing Specialists promotes specialty nurse certifications. The ABNS, “promotes lifelong learning and professional development for nurses as a means to enhance patient safety and improve healthcare outcomes across a variety of practice settings,” (AMN Healthcare, 2023). Similar to the NLN the ABNS has an intent / focus on education. However, the ABNS pertains more specifically to APRN’s and advanced learning and certifications. 

These organizations all align closely with my worldview. I believe that all people should be treated with dignity and respect. By promoting continuing education and professional development, these organizations are encouraging nurses to be the best they can be. When nurses are better educated and prepared, they are able to better serve their patients.

The three organizations of interest are the National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA), the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), and the American Society of Perianesthesia Nurses (ASPAN). The NSNA dedicates the organization to the development of future nurses as they follow their educational path towards a career in nursing (National Student Nurses’ Association [NSNA], 2021).

Additionally, the association provides scholarships to undergraduate students to complete their degrees. NSNA members can join their university and state nursing organizations and participate in leadership activities. The NSNA has biannual meetings that provide information relevant to current nursing, health care, and legislative issues (NSNA, 2021). The AACN represents nurses dedicated to academia (American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], 2021).

It establishes and implements educational standards for nursing students at any level of nursing education. The AACN guides nurses toward improving health care. Nurses are supported by the AACN in their education, research, and practice. The membership comprises nursing schools, faculty, and students (AACN, 2021). ASPAN is the organization that represents perianesthesia nursing.

The group sets the standards of care and clinical guidelines for the care of patients in the preoperative and postoperative settings (American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses [ASPAN], 2021). The society provides membership that includes seminars, webinars, reviews for certification, and a journal dedicated to perianesthesia care. New and current information is provided along with legislation that impacts the clinical areas of care.

The organization encourages certification and offers reviews at various locations in the country (ASPAN, 2021). All three organizations have stated in some form that they are committed to nursing education and improving the care of each patient. This is my goal in furthering my education. Professional nursing organizations are important in generating passion, flow of new ideas and being proactive in enhancing nurses’ skills and knowledge through education. THE National League of Nursing was founded in 1893 with its headquarters in New York. It is an organization for nurse’s faculty and leaders in nurse education. Moreover, its mission is to advance quality nursing education for both RN & LPN and prepares the nursing work force to meet the needs of diverse populations in an ever-changing health care environment in the United States of America. The NLN is also involved in professional development, networking opportunities, testing services, public policies, and nursing research. (Lucille. 2012)

The American Nurses Association works continuously and in various ways to improve the quality of nursing care that are available to the public and is also involves in nursing education and health care policy makings. One of its main functions is to develop and disseminate information on ethical and human rights issues facing the profession. (Lucille. 2012)

The international council of nurses was established in 1899 with its headquarters in Geneva Switzerland, it boasts a membership of 130 different countries and an association representing over 28 million nurses worldwide. The ICN mission is to ensure quality nursing care for all, sound healthcare policies globally, the advancement of evidence base nursing skills and knowledge. (Lucille.2012)

All three of these organizations’ membership requires a fee and  focus is to serve the general population with emphasis in improving health care systems through education and collaboration with other regulatory bodies and patient safety. Like these organizations my goals are to acquire new skills and knowledge in leadership through education so I can continue to advocate, provide safe and effective patient care to the public regardless of their cultural practices, religious beliefs, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.

There are more than three professional nursing organizations that interest me. I am already a member or involved with the Society of Pediatric Nurses (SPN), and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) due to CCRN classes, testing and certification; and plan on attending the National Teaching Institute (NTI) and Critical Care exposition in May because of this association.

So, for the sake of this discussion, I am going to explore nursing organizations I hope to learn more about as my career progresses as an APRN. The American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC), the American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA), and the Society of Pediatric Cardiovascular Nurses (SPCN).

The ANCC is a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association (ANA) that is known for high quality credentialing and certification programs. The seek to recognized both individual and organizational excellence in terms of specialties, high quality patient care, and magnet recognition. They have multiple different programs and purpose, and requirements differ based on program.

What piqued my interest is that the ANCC offers one of the few certifications related to nursing informatics. They offer the Informatics Nursing Certification that requires a current RN license, and multiple clinical hours or having completed a graduate degree in informatics. The ANCC also offers many awards, scholarships and study aids to help promote education and the advancement of the nursing field.

The American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA) more specific to informatics. The ANIA seeks to “advance nursing informatics through education, research and practice in all roles and settings” (ANIA, 2021). Membership serves to be a good way to network, they offer continue education, give access to up to date research and the Journal of Informatics Nursing, have annual conferences, and have discussion forums for members. For membership requirements you just have to have a valid license and diploma in nursing, or being a current student of nursing, and you must pay the membership fee.

The Society of Pediatric Cardiovascular Nurses (SPCN) is the smallest of the mentioned professional organizations but is most specifically related to my current role as a pediatric cardiovascular ICU nurse. The SPCN currently has about 400 members and serves as a great resource for those within the specialty to communicate with one another and share information and resources (SPNC, n.d.). The requirements are simply a membership fee. The SPCN serves a very small niche specialty, so it interests me to be able to connect with those within the same field.

In my current work, care is so specific to this population, and the pediatric population as a whole is understudied. I feel the continued education and research related to nursing practice is of upmost importance. With advancements in technology and continued advancements in research and education I feel this will continue to serve and benefit the patient population.

I feel that all three of the mentioned organizations do a great job in supporting the advancement, continued educations, and dissemination of resources and information. All of these professional organization contribute to the advancement of the nursing field as a whole, and goals and motivation for doing so are very much in line with my own career interests and worldviews.

The American Association of Critical Care Nurses is a non-profit association of acute and critical care nurses offering professional support in pursuit of the best possible patient care. In 1960, AACN is named as American Association of Cardiovascular Nurses, it was established to help educate nurses that are new in the intensive care unit. 10 years later, it was changed to the American Association of Critical-Care nurses to reflect the diverse complexities who are acutely or critically ill.

Its purpose is to create a healthcare system driven by the needs of patients and families where acute and critical care nurses make their contributions. Certifications like critical care and progressive care certification are conducted by the organization. This organization is aligned with my goal because they conduct certification for my future role as an acute-care nurse practitioner.

Requirements for the exam include a U.S. RN license, must complete a graduate-level advanced practice education program as an adult-gerontology ACNP at a nationally accredited school of nursing. The organization’s values include integrity, inclusion, transformation, leadership, and relationships that support my personal worldview. (American Association of Critical care Nurses, n.d.)

The second organization that interests me is the American Association of Heart Failure Nurses. My background as a cardiac intensive care unit nurse gave me an interest in specializing in heart failure. I see myself working in a team of heart failure providers and conducting research on any new trends regarding the disease. The organization unites professionals, patients, and caregivers in the support and advancement of heart failure practice, education, and research, thus promoting optimal patient outcomes (American Association of Heart Failure Nurses, n.d.).

The organization stated that it shows characteristics, perspective, and contributions to all members regardless of age, appearance, disability, ethnicity, gender, location, nationality, religion, or nationality. Based on my personal worldview, I would like to work with this type of diverse population no matter what type of person. The organization focuses on heart failure improvement through research and clinical practice.

Lastly, the AANP or American Association of Nurse Practitioners is an organization of NPs and NP students to advance care for diverse communities through practice, education, advocacy, research, and leadership. (AANP, n.d.) Becoming a member of this organization includes an application form by choosing a member type as an NP or NP student and paying the fee. The population focus of the organization is all NPs from adult gerontology, pediatric, and psychiatric with various specialties.

This organization helps me reach my goal because they conduct seminars, conferences, and campaigns. I would like to be a part of the board members someday and organize the conference bringing all the nurse practitioners together and conducting the event. The organization also hosts continuing education to help to stay on top of the field. It also focuses on advocacy presenting an understanding of core issues influencing the NP practice.

Becoming a member of a nursing organization whether one or many is a nice idea.  Different nursing organizations are assigned unique roles. For instance, AACN applauds individual and organizational success in the nursing sector.  Therefore, the organization certifies programs that allow nurses to improve on their performance levels. AACN has various programs with unique purposes to improve both individual and organization excellence (Schmidt & McArthur, 2018).

The nursing agency has to ensure that nurses willing to join their organization understand the demands.  ANIA is another beneficial nursing organization involved in advancing nursing informatics through research, education, and other activities providing crucial information for nurses (Harrison et al., 2020).  Therefore, ANIA membership involves nurses and nursing researchers. Also, to be allowed as a member of the agency has a valid license and diploma in nursing is necessary.  

SPCN is another nursing organization.  The organization is not famous despite being important in the healthcare settings.  SPCN has 400 members who enjoy the cordial relationship as they perform their roles. The members share information and other resources that help them achieve the organization’s goals.

The evidence-based project I choose to discuss is nurse burnout. Working in the emergency room, I tend to see many nurses jaded, as I would describe it. They have become emotionally detached from their patients, not caring as much as they should. I think the dissociation has to do with the emotional damage the ER does to one individual. As a nurse, it is our responsibility to take care of the patient, ensuring their needs are taken care of. In my mind, this ranges from needs such as hygiene, medication, and even emotional needs. My question is does nurse burnout affect patient safety?

Looking at the research, I would prefer to look at peer-reviewed journal articles. Using the New Jersey Institute of Technology Library CRAAP test, I will evaluate the appropriateness of the research. The information of the article was received in August 2020 and later published in December 2020. T

he article has not been revised or updated and is still current because it has been within the last 5 years. My research article is relative to my idea because it discusses the association between nurse burnout and patient safety. The intended audience is anyone who is interested in this correlation. It especially pertains to nurses because it discusses the effects of what emotional damage does to your nursing practice.

The author of this publication is Maria Sovariova Soosova, while the publisher is the Central Journal of Nursing and Midwifery. The author is a very respected author with numerous publications. Her most recent publication was published in June of 2022 and looked at illness cognitions and the health-related quality of life of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. The study used a cross-sectional design, where 117 nurses completed a survey.

It was concluded a higher level of burnout was associated with a lower grade of patient safety (Soósová, 2021). After thoroughly reading the publication, I have decided it is unbiased and free of emotion. It speaks facts and is backed up by research and the opinions of other nurses. The purpose of this article is to inform and educate nurses across the world.

Nurse burnout is a real problem and needs to be addressed. Nurses need to be taking time for themselves to prevent emotional damage. Preventing emotional damage helps prevent medication errors, thus increasing patient outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Imagine the following scenario: You are taking the evidence-based practice course and one of your classmates shares an EBP project draft with you. You notice that some of the research has not been cited coJTectly or even at all. When you approach your classmate, the response is that “no one will notice and it is not a big deal anyway.” What are your next steps in speaking with your classmate? Consider how this could reflect on the credibility and integrity of the individuals involved, the University , and the profession.

To start with, I would inform the student that the failure to cite properly constitutes plagiarism and is a form of academic dishonesty. Academic dishonesty occurs for several reasons: the perception by the students that the assessments are too difficult and time-consuming, lack of the basic writing skills such as direct quotations, paraphrasing and referencing, and the believe that they can get away with cheating (Emmanuel, Fielden, & Miller-Rosser, 2021). In order to illustrate the importance of properly citing the sources of information, I would share my paper with the student.

This recommendation is based on a finding that some nursing students tend to cheat due to the perception that if their peers can get away with cheating, then they might as well cheat (Emmanuel, Fielden, & Miller-Rosser, 2021). Finally, I would brief the student about the institutional policies contained in the University Policy Handbook. This is due to the notion that some students engage in academic dishonesty due to lack of knowledge on the need for ethical behavior.

Most of the students who cheat academically are those with poor adherence to ethical standards. In fact studies have established that dishonesty in nursing schools is related to future dishonesty in nursing practice (Carter, Hussey, & Forehand, 2019). There is a common believe that the penalties imposed by the university for the offence of cheating are minimal.

Even so, the consequences are bad for those caught. For example, one might suffer effects such as job dismissal and removal of licensure. Therefore, I would inform the student that the simple action based on a misinformed notion that no one will find out might damage his or her reputation and potentially jeopardize his or her professional nursing practice.

Research health care legislation that is being considered in your state. What impact might this legislation have on your future practice? What impact does it have on the collective practice of nurses in your state? How do you envision yourself potentially becoming involved in political advocacy for the profession in your future practice?

Legislation that has been under consideration in New Jersey for years is mandating staffing to ensure adequate nurse-to-patient ratios. I believe that there are two things to consider when complex rules like this dictate numbers alone. The potential cost to organizations and the improvement of care for patients.

When discussing cost, it is important to include not only the cost of the additional nurses that will be needed to maintain these rations but also the cost savings that would potentially occur with a reduction in nursing turnover and better patient outcomes. The question is, how do we know that those things would result from improved nurse-to-patient ratios? The amount of mandated states is low, and the research is unclear on nursing turnover or patient outcomes.

Collectively, I believe this would primarily benefit nurses and patients alike, but this legislation also has a downside. When ratios cannot be maintained, hospitals must find other ways to compensate, and solutions may not be as appealing as expected. Pulling nurses from other units or using leadership in staffing leaves other areas lacking and work that is not being done.

Another option is to lower the skill mix and hire LPNs to do some of the current work that nurses do. This likewise has the potential to negatively affect nursing by decreasing the level of care and the demand for registered nurses. It is more likely that the hospital will cut LPNs and nursing aids to compensate for the increased cost of more RNs. Leaving RNs to do more task-oriented work and less care planning.

Advocating for nursing practice means considering all the pros and cons of this situation and bringing the discussion to the forefront of nursing councils. Empowering nurses with the knowledge and understanding of all the potential risks and benefits of staffing ratios in order for them to make an informed decision on what they will fight for or support. I intend to be a voice for nursing in as many venues as possible. Still, that voice must do the work needed to understand the implications of legislation focusing on numbers and not quality of care.
